THE CYRIL B. BUNTER BAND

Thirty-two years in the making - now here at last!

The Cyril B. Bunter Band’s long-awaited new album - their first all-new studio recording in 32 years! - features tracks harking right back to the band’s 1972 roots at The Welcome Inn, Sussex Street, plus brand-new never-before-heard original houserocking blues and boogie.

Between 1972 and 1985, The Bunters toured Australia ceaselessly, earning a reputation for good-time, soul-satisfying blues-infused boogie. They had built a fanatical cult following during the course of a four-year-long residency at Sydney’s notorious and legendary Welcome Inn, a humble seaman’s pub at the dirty end of Sussex Street, regularly drawing 300-400 loyal fans to the tiny venue’s front bar every Friday and Saturday night.

Eventually spreading their wings to the national touring circuit, they played six-nights-a-week year in and year out, and racked up seven major nationwide tours opening shows for the Godfather of British Blues, John Mayall and U.S. blues legends Canned Heat. The band also became fast friends with George Thorogood during three tours together, culminating in George recording The Bunters’ song “Boogie People” as the title track of his 1985 album.

Concurrently, The Bunters played countless shows backing Melbourne blues legend Dutch Tilders, and in between headlined their own roadshow tours, spreading the gospel of The Real Good Boogie far and wide before disbanding in 1985. The members then all went on to build distinguished individual careers on the Oz blues-and-roots circuit in bands including The Foreday Riders, Ray Beadle’s Vipers, James T. and The Last Volunteers, Swamphouse and The King Bees.

Then in 2013, The Bunters were invited to reunite for the Thredbo Blues Festival. Audience responses were so overwhelmingly positive that the band re-released their 70s-80s vinyl recordings on CD for the first time, and embarked on their 41st Anniversary Reunion Tour, thrilling fans old and new on a string of festival and club dates.

The band launched a live CD “THE GOOD BOOGIE LIVE!” to a throbbing full-house crowd at Sydney’s Basement in 2014. Compiled from shows on their reunion tour, it garnered universally positive reviews and reached #4 on the ABARAC Blues chart. Come 2015-16, the band floored audiences on their high-octane East Coast “SUPERHARP” shows with mighty Melbourne harpman Chris Wilson, paying tribute to their all-time Mississippi harmonica hero James Cotton. Celebrating their 45th Anniversary in 2017, The Bunters followed up with an incendiary series of shows entitled “SHOWDOWN” in collaboration with Oz blues guitar ace Mal Eastick. Their many crowd-pleasing festival appearances have certainly restored the band to their rightful place at the forefront of the Australian roots music scene.

And now in 2018, The Bunters, their powers undiminished, present the new album “LOCO•MOTIVE”. Three founding members - Gary Lothian, Jimmy Bee and Rosscoe Clark - plus the great Ali Penney on keyboards and featuring guest saxman Dave Wray, deliver an all-killer-no-filler selection of The Real Good Boogie which will surely bring them further new fans as they continue to tour, their houserocking live shows being described by those in the know as “even better than the first time around”!
